As envisioned by the Prime Minister, Sh. Narendra Modi, Department of Pension & Pensioners' Welfare (DoPPW) took over the daunting task of documenting the administrative history of India through personal memoirs of retired employees by launching an online platform entitled 'Anubhav' in 2015.
To incentivize and encourage the retired employees, it was decided to confer 05 National Anubhav Awards in 2015. Any employee who is going to retire in next 8 months or who has retired within a period not exceeding 3 years can submit their write-up on the portal, which is then published by the concerned ministry or department from which he has retired. Thereafter, the published write up is evaluated by DoPPW and finalized for 05 Anubhav Awards or 10 Anubhav Jury Awards.
In 2025, National Anubhav Awards are celebrating 10 years of their illustrious contribution with more than 12,500 published memoirs on Anubhav Portal, reflecting growing recognition of these Awards.
The Awards are governed by National Anubhav Awards Scheme, which has seen several improvements and initiatives over the years; undertaken to realize the objectives behind the Anubhav portal.
In 2022, Anubhav Awardees’ Speak, a webinar series was introduced, wherein the Awardees address and share their experiences with the soon-to-be-retiring employees and encourage them for participation in the scheme.
In 2023, 10 Anubhav Jury Awards, apart from 05 Anubhav Awards, taking the total awards to 15, were also introduced to ensure wider participation. Also, in the same year, specific number of awards were assigned to the three pay scale groups viz., pay level 1 to 6, pay level 7 to 12 and pay level 13 and above, to ensure participation from all pay scales especially lower rung officials.
In 2024, marking system was introduced for bringing objectivity in the assessment process and employees of 12 Public Sector Banks and Central Public Sector Enterprises were also included in the scheme to recognize their contribution in the nation building and for an increase in the participation base.
In 2025, marks to the ‘feedback/ suggestions’ have been assigned in the marking system in the recently notified National Anubhav Awards Scheme, 2026.
Till date, 59 Anubhav Awards and 19 Anubhav Jury Awards have been conferred 7 Ceremonies, held annually since 2016 barring 2020/2021 due to covid pandemic. While, CRPF, CISF and DRDO are the top contributors of the write-ups on the Anubhav Portal, maximum number of Awards have been bagged by DRDO, CRPF and Ministry of Railways.
