Kolkata, August 22, 2025
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) today launched the third edition of its flagship Accelerated Innovation Nurturing Scheme (GAINS 2025) in Kolkata. The initiative was formally inaugurated by Defence Secretary of Government of India, Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh. Building on the success of the previous editions, GAINS 2025 aims to accelerate technological innovation in shipbuilding and strengthen the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The launch ceremony was graced by Chairman & Managing Director of GRSE Cmde PR Hari, Director (Shipbuilding) Cdr Shantanu Bose, Director (Corporate Planning & Personnel) Capt P. Sunilkumar, Chief Vigilance Officer Shri Abhishek Ranjan along with senior officers and distinguished dignitaries of GRSE.
Designed as a national open innovation challenge, GAINS provides a platform for MSMEs and Start-Ups to develop next-generation technologies that can be integrated into GRSE’s shipbuilding processes. The scheme aligns with the Government’s Make in India and Start-up India initiatives, enabling India’s innovation ecosystem to address present and emerging challenges in ship design and construction while reinforcing the goal of self-reliance.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Shri Singh said, “The overwhelming response to the first two editions of GAINS reflects the strength of India’s innovation ecosystem. The themes of GAINS 2025 — Artificial Intelligence, Green Technology, and Efficiency Enhancement in Shipbuilding — are timely and critical. With projects in AI, robotics, and renewable energy already progressing from earlier editions, I am confident that this year’s challenge will further push the frontiers of innovation in these areas.”
Cmde Hari emphasized the wider impact of the initiative, stating, “Not only GRSE, but the Indian start-up ecosystem has truly ‘gained’ from GAINS. With GAINS 2025, we expect participation to cross the century mark, reaffirming our commitment to building a future-ready shipyard and advancing India’s defence manufacturing capabilities.”
Like the earlier editions, GAINS 2025 will focus on three key areas:
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Renewable/Green Energy & Energy Efficiency
Overall Efficiency Enhancement
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a leading Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has a rich legacy dating back to 1884. It became the first Indian shipyard to build a warship for the Indian Navy in 1961 and has since delivered over 800 vessels, including 113 warships, to the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and friendly foreign nations — the highest number of warships delivered by any Indian shipyard.
With modern infrastructure capable of concurrently building 28 ships, GRSE is also engaged in engineering and manufacturing activities, including deck machinery, portable steel bridges, and marine equipment. The shipyard’s strong design capability, advanced facilities, and proven track record make it a key contributor to India’s defence preparedness and a trusted partner in the nation’s pursuit of self-reliance in shipbuilding.
