DR. BAL RAM JAKHAR, FORMER LOK SABHA SPEAKER REMEMBERED IN CENTRAL HALL OF SAMVIDHAN SADAN ON HIS BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

Dr. Bal Ram Jakhar, former Speaker, Lok Sabha, was remembered in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan on his birth anniversary, today. Shri Harivansh, Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha; Members of Parliament; former Members; and Secretary-General Lok Sabha, Shri Utpal Kumar Singh paid tributes to Dr. Jakhar. Senior Officers of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariats also paid tributes on this occasion.

Dr. Bal Ram Jakhar was elected Speaker of the Seventh Lok Sabha on 22 January 1980 and continued till 15 January 1985. He was re-elected unanimously as Speaker, Lok Sabha to the Eighth Lok Sabha on 16 January, 1985 and continued for the full term upto 18 December 1989. Dr. Jakhar had the unique distinction of being the only Lok Sabha Speaker in independent India to have presided over two successive Lok Sabhas for their full terms. Hailing from an agricultural family, Dr. Jakhar also served as the Union Minister of Agriculture during the Tenth Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996. Dr. Jakhar breathed his last on 3 February 2016.

The portrait of Dr. Bal Ram Jakhar was unveiled by the then President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, on 10 February, 2014.
