Thrissur, 29 August 2025: Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri George Kurian, inaugurated the construction of an Integrated Modern Coastal Fishing Village (IMCFV) at Edakkazhiyur in Thrissur district today. The initiative is being implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), a flagship programme of the Government of India designed to strengthen the fisheries sector through sustainable and responsible development in collaboration with State Governments.
Addressing the gathering, Shri George Kurian noted that nine villages are being developed under the Integrated Modern Fisheries Village programme in Kerala at a cost of ₹1,359 crore, with funding shared between the Centre and the State in a 60:40 ratio.
Heappreciated the state government for supporting the Centre in implementing the project.
The Union Minister pointed out that, in addition, two modern fisheries markets are also being developed—one in Aluva and another in Kozhikode—which will serve as processing centres providing hygienically cleaned and export-quality products to customers through specialized kiosks.
The Minister further highlighted that six more climate-resilient coastal villages are being developed in Kerala with full Central funding. He mentioned that transponders for fisherfolk venturing into the sea, developed in coordination with ISRO, are being distributed free of cost. So far, around 6,500 such devices have already been provided in the State.
Shri George Kurian also urged fish workers to register themselves on the National Fisheries Digital Platform, underscoring that digital integration will help ensure targeted delivery of welfare measures and services.
He emphasised that strengthening the fisheries sector not only enhances the livelihood of fish workers but also contributes to the larger economy. He remarked that when individuals work to increase their income, it uplifts families and, in turn, strengthens the nation’s economic foundation.
The Integrated Modern Coastal Fishery Villages scheme, a component of PMMSY, focuses on comprehensive social and economic development of coastal villages. In Kerala, the project is being taken up in 9 coastal fishing villages. Edakkazhiyur in Thrissur district has been selected as one among them, where projects worth ₹577 lakh are under implementation to improve fisheries infrastructure and enhance livelihood opportunities of fish workers.
The inauguration ceremony, held at Edakkazhiyur beach, was presided by Shri N. K. Akbar, MLA of Guruvayur constituency, and attended by people’s representatives from district, block and gram panchayat levels along with officials and local stakeholders.
