National Sample Survey (NSS) was set up by the Government of India in the year 1950 to carry out nation vide sample surveys to collect data on various socio-economic subjects. It has been carrying out surveys on various subjects such as Household Consumption Expenditure, Employment & Unemployment, Survey of Industries, Health, Education, Agriculture, Debt & Investment etc. Its efforts have empowered policymakers, researchers, and the public with reliable and timely data, thereby facilitating evidence-based policymaking and informed public discourse.

NSS headed by a Director General, presently, is a part of the National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India. As part of the year long celebrations 75th anniversary of the NSS started from October 2024, NSO's South Zone office in Bengaluru, is organising a celebratory event at Yuvaraja's College, University of Mysuru (one of the pioneering universities which introduced Statistics at graduation level in the country), on September 12, 2025

The theme of the event is Storytelling through Data - Launch of the 'Voices Behind the Data'. In a series of similar events organised by Zonal Offices of NSO the critical role played by field staff and the informants in gathering data that shapes policy and governance in India will be highlighted.

The event at the Platinum Jubilee Auditorium of Yuvaraja's College will be graced by senior officers from MoSPI, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mysore, as well as Zonal and Regional Heads of NSO, alongside other distinguished dignitaries from the field of Statistics.

The celebration will also witness enthusiastic participation from students of various colleges affiliated with the University of Mysore, offering them a unique opportunity to engage with the legacy and future of Statistical Sciences in India. MOSPI remains committed to advancing the quality, credibility, and reach of official statistics in India and celebrates the unsung heroes who continue to uphold the integrity of survey data.
