A long-cherished dream of Mizoram finally has become reality on Saturday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51-kilometre Bairabi–Sairang railway line. Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has played a vital role in the Project by supplying nearly 15,000 tonnes of steel that forms the backbone of this ambitious project. While SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant, alone contributed about 10,000 tonnes of high-grade R-260 prime rail. The remaining 5,000 tonnes of plates, TMT bars and structural steel came from SAIL’s other major plants in Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur and Burnpur.

For the people of Mizoram, the project promises more than just railway tracks — it is expected to transform connectivity, ease travel through the state’s hilly terrain, and unlock new avenues for trade and economic growth. Locals believe it will cut travel time and open a new chapter of connectivity with rest of India. “This project reflects India’s commitment to improving connectivity in every corner of the country. We are proud that our steel has powered this important milestone for the Northeast,” SAIL said in a statement.
