ICAR–CIFT conducts an awareness programme on hygiene and waste management in Thevara fish market,Kochi

ICAR–CIFT organized an awareness programme at the Thevara Fish Market, Ernakulam. The event was conducted in collaboration with the Kochi Municipal Corporation, as a part of Swachhta Hi Seva campaign Govt.of India.
Swachhta Hi Seva campaign is a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness, hygiene, and waste management practices in markets and public places.


Dr.Pe.Jeyya Jeyanthi,Principal Scientist, ICAR–CIFT welcomed the gathering and briefed on the objectives of the programme. Mr.Shaj Subhash, Thevara Circle Senior Health Inspector, highlighted the significance of maintaining cleanliness for public health and market reputation. An awareness on ‘Responsible handling, hygienic marketing practices and waste utilisation of fish’ was delivered by Dr. Martin Xavier, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFT. In addition, a demonstration of ‘CIFT Rapid Testing Kit’ and its importance in ensuring the safety of fish was also conducted. Cleaning and hygiene kits -Gloves, waste bins, buckets and disinfectant agents etc.) were distributed to fish vendors and cleaning personnel to support the regular upkeep of the market. Two leaflets on ‘Hygienic Handling in Fish Markets’ and ‘Reducing post-harvest losses in fish’ were distributed to the participants.
