Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Guwahati observes ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ (SHS) and Special Campaign 5.0 at Deepor Beel

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Sub-Office Guwahati, organized a cleanliness and awareness programme under the nationwide ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ (SHS) and Special Campaign 5.0 at the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary, in Guwahati in collaboration with officials and staff of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The event was held under the supervision and guidance of Dr. V. George Jenner, IFS, DDGF (C), Regional Office Shillong and Shri Pee Lee Ete, IFS, DIGF (C), Sub-Office Guwahati, MoEF&CC.

As part of the Implementation Phase of the Special Campaign 5.0 the programme aimed to promote cleanliness, environmental awareness and conservation of the ecologically significant Deepor Beel wetland and its adjoining areas. A similar cleanliness drive is also scheduled at the MoEF&CC Office on October 17, 2025, to reinforce institutional Swachhata and efficient office management.

The day’s activities began with a cleanliness drive at Deepor Beel, led by Dr. Hemen Hazarika, Scientist-E, along with officials and staff from MoEF&CC and NTCA. Participants were provided with T-shirts, caps, gloves and cleaning equipment for the drive.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Hazarika highlighted the importance of the campaign, emphasizing the need for active participation of officials to set an example in environmental protection. He spoke about minimizing plastic use, reducing carbon-emitting substances, and ensuring both physical and administrative cleanliness in workplaces. He also stressed on systematic site identification and beautification of office spaces to enhance productivity and promote sustainable practices.

Shri T. James Singh, Research Officer, MoEF&CC, Guwahati, elaborated on the ecological and hydrological importance of Deepor Beel as a Ramsar Site and Wildlife Sanctuary. He expressed concern over plastic pollution and waste dumping, underlining the need for public awareness and community involvement to safeguard the beel’s biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Dr. Diana Ethel Amonge, Consultant, MoEF&CC, highlighted the potential of Deepor Beel as an eco-tourism destination that benefits local communities through guided tours, local crafts, and sustainable livelihoods. She emphasized responsible tourism and the need to sensitize visitors on waste management and wetland conservation.

Ms. Agatha Ch. Momin, Wildlife Biologist NTCA, discussed the importance of Deepor Beel as an Important Bird Area (IBA), supporting several migratory and threatened species including the Greater Adjutant Stork. She emphasized regular awareness campaigns, installation of cleanliness signage, and continued efforts for wildlife conservation and habitat protection.
