Under the Special Campaign 5.0.  South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a leading subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has set new benchmarks in cleanliness, sustainability, and inclusivity.

Through innovative waste management, recycling, women empowerment, and mechanised cleaning initiatives, SECL has demonstrated how a major coal producer can lead by example in environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

At the forefront of SECL’s efforts is its “Waste to Wealth” initiative at Gevra, Asia’s largest coal mine. The project focuses on scientific segregation of waste at the source, followed by processing at a Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) Centre.

The biodegradable fraction is transformed into nutrient-rich compost, promoting soil health and supporting SECL’s extensive plantation drives. The initiative embodies the idea of “turning trash into treasure,” creating a model for circular economy within mining operations.

Adding an artistic dimension to sustainability, SECL’s Central Excavation Workshop (CEWS), Gevra, has transformed industrial scrap into impressive large-scale artworks. Among these are a striking model of the S-400 missile system accompanied by a robotic soldier, a replica of the “BrahMos” missile has been installed in the Korba Area, and a majestic statue of a coal miner crafted entirely from discarded machine parts and bearings has been put up at Hasdeo Area.

Demonstrating a strong commitment to inclusivity and women empowerment, SECL recently inaugurated the first-ever women-operated Store Unit for spare parts supply and management at Korba.

Further strengthening its cleanliness infrastructure, SECL has introduced 20 Mechanical Road Sweeping Machines deployed across nine operational areas for modern, dust-free cleaning of coal transportation and colony roads.
Alongside these flagship initiatives, SECL’s campaign also featured health and wellness camps for employees and residents, felicitation of Safai Mitras for their contribution to cleanliness, installation of bio-toilets in mining areas, and cleanliness drives under Swachhata Hi Seva – Swachhotsav 2025 at key community sites like the banks of the Arpa River.
