NIOT Scientists represent Blue Economy at ESTIC 2025 Inaugurated by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in New Delhi

A team of scientists from the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, participated in the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC 2025) inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

ESTIC 2025 is a flagship national platform designed to accelerate innovation, research collaboration, and technology deployment in pursuit of Viksit Bharat @ 2047. The Ministry of Earth Sciences is leading the critical Blue Economy theme at this year’s conclave, which focuses on sustainable ocean development and technology-led marine resource management.

NIOT Highlights Ocean Innovation from Chennai

The NIOT delegation presented the institute’s pioneering contributions in ocean observation systems, underwater vehicles, ocean thermal energy conversion, renewable ocean energy etc. The participation underscored NIOT’s role in developing indigenous marine technologies that contribute to a sustainable and resilient ocean economy.

Prof. Balaji Ramakrishnan, Director, NIOT, lauded the efforts of the participating scientists and noted, “NIOT’s research and technological innovations align closely with the Ministry’s Blue Economy vision. The institute’s ongoing work from its Chennai base is helping position India as a global leader in sustainable ocean technologies and marine innovation.”

Major National Announcements at ESTIC 2025

In his inaugural address, the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced a 1 lakh crore National Research Fund to promote private-sector participation and strengthen India’s innovation ecosystem.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, emphasized the strategic importance of the Blue Economy in addressing national priorities such as clean energy, marine resources, and climate resilience.

Strengthening India’s Blue Economy Vision

At the ESTIC 2025 venue, the Blue Economy pavilion of MoES featured innovations and exhibits from its institutes — NIOT (Chennai), INCOIS (Hyderabad), IITM (Pune), and NCESS (Thiruvananthapuram) — showcasing advances in ocean observation, climate services, marine ecosystem research, and deep-sea exploration.

NIOT’s displays received wide attention for their relevance to sustainable ocean engineering and renewable energy solutions being developed in Chennai.

A Moment of Pride for Chennai’s Scientific Community

The participation of NIOT scientists at ESTIC 2025 reaffirms Chennai’s prominence as a national hub for ocean technology research. The institute continues to contribute to India’s marine missions, renewable ocean energy initiatives, and ocean-observation programmes under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
