IIT Madras has inaugurated the 'Language and Cognition Laboratory' (LC-Lab) within its Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. This is India’s first facility to systematically study the country's vast linguistic diversity using an interdisciplinary and technology-driven approach, marking a significant integration of science, technology, and humanities.
The LC-Lab, inaugurated on 10th November 2025 by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, will employ advanced experimental methods like eye-tracking and reaction-time studies to investigate how people perceive, process, and produce language. Its research focuses primarily on Indian languages, offering crucial insights into grammar and sentence structure in multilingual contexts.
Prof. Kamakoti highlighted the importance of this interdisciplinary research, noting, "The Language and Cognition Lab was established to fill the gap—creating a space that connects linguistics, cognitive science, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence, and contributes to the development of socially relevant, linguistically informed technologies."
Speaking about the lab, its Faculty Coordinator Dr. Anindita Sahoo said, “The Language and Cognition laboratory (LC-Lab) is dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research in language and cognition through the use of technologies that reveal behavioural patterns and enable data-driven understanding of human interaction.”
A core long-term goal is to contribute to human-centred and linguistically aware AI systems, ensuring Indian languages and cultures are represented in emerging technologies.
