‘Open Air Screenings’ opens IFFI’s door for localites

“These screenings are designed for family audiences”: Pankaj Saxena

#IFFIWood, 27 November 2025

The open-air screenings are an inherent part of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The core festival itself is designed for delegates who register, pay a fee and are genuine film buffs. Attendance to IFFI screenings is restricted to those above 18 years of age and is curated for a mature, film-literate audience.

However, IFFI is committed to involve the local community and create a celebratory atmosphere all around. Goa, especially during IFFI, becomes very festive and families from the local Goan population love to step out together, enjoy the festival environment, eat good food, and experience the sea breeze on the beach. The open-air screenings aim to cater exactly to this constituency.

Shri Pankaj Saxena, Artistic Director, IFFI mentioned, “These screenings are designed for family audiences. Most open-air venues are set against the sea, with a beautiful skyline, clean surroundings, good sound, comfortable seating, and high-quality projection. There is typically one show per day for the seven days, and the films selected are international as well as Indian; but always suitable for family viewing.”

He went on to elaborate, “Regarding the selection, this year we have around eight films lined up. The idea behind the selection is to present a mix of international cinema that is appropriate for all ages and often carries a small message or universal theme. In addition, some of the films we screen have already been showcased or awarded in the Indian Panorama section in previous editions of IFFI.”

The list of films for this year’s ‘Open Air Screenings’ includes:

  1. Home Alone/ Dir. Chris Columbus/
  2. IF (Imaginary Friends)/ Dir. John Krasinski
  3. Sonic the Hedgehog/ Dir. Jeff Fowler
  4. The Truman Show/ Dir. Peter Weir
  5. 12th Fail/ Dir. Vidhu Vinod Chopra
  6. My Boss/ Dir. Nandita Roy, Shiboprosad Mukherjee
  7. Manjummel Boys/ Dir. Chidambaram
  8. Shyam's Mother/ Dir. Sujay Dahake

In essence, the open-air screenings ensure that while IFFI remains a serious, delegate-driven festival, it also becomes a celebration for everyone; especially families who simply want to enjoy good cinema under the open sky.
