The Experiential Technology Innovation Centre (XTIC) at IIT Madras, an Institute of Eminence Centre for Virtual Reality, today (28.11.2025) hosted the first-ever International XR Symposium for the Global South. The event marks a significant step in positioning India at the forefront of Extended Reality (XR) technologies (AR, VR, MR, and Haptics) and accelerating the Nation’s drive towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in immersive systems.
Despite having the world’s second-largest developer base, India currently contributes less than 1% to the global XR market, projected to surpass USD 250 billion by 2030. India’s domestic AR/VR market, valued at USD 4.84 billion in 2023, is projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of about 38.3% through 2032.
Experts at the symposium declared Extended Reality (XR) the next major technological surge after AI, set to revolutionize sectors like education and healthcare. Led by Prof. M. Manivannan, IIT Madras's XTIC is now championing cost-effective XR innovation and proposing an 'India XR Corridor' to unify academia, industry, and government, ultimately driving indigenous IP creation and deploying affordable, Indian-made XR solutions.
Industry leaders from Qualcomm and Meta highlighted the symbiotic relationship between AI and XR, with XR devices acting as the 'eyes and ears' of AI. The symposium aims to build a self-reliant XR ecosystem by prioritizing cost-effective innovation, strengthening the CAVE consortium, and accelerating XR adoption in critical sectors like education, defence, and space.
