Institute Celebrates 7th Foundation Day with Renewed Commitment to Advancing Healthcare in Central India

AIIMS Nagpur marked its 7th Foundation Day, today the 1st of December 2025, commemorating seven years of progress in healthcare delivery, medical education, research advancement, and public health services. Since its inception, the institute has continued to strengthen its role as a premier centre of excellence in Central India.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. Anant Pandhare, President, AIIMS Nagpur, as the Chief Guest, and Dr. Sanjay Paithankar, CEO & Managing Director, Right Health, UAE, as the Guest of Honour. Both dignitaries highlighted the expanding contributions of AIIMS Nagpur in raising the standards of tertiary care and community oriented services across Central India.
Executive Director & CEO, Prof. (Dr.) Prashant P. Joshi, delivered the formal welcome address and acknowledged the collective efforts of faculty, staff, and students in shaping the institute’s steady trajectory of growth. He highlighted that AIIMS Nagpur has treated over 24 lakh OPD patients since its inception, with a daily OPD load of 3,500–4,000 patients and a record high of 4,405 patients on 30 September 2024. He further noted that the institute has provided care to more than 98,000 IPD patients, with 100–120 admissions per day, supported by 940 functional beds, 105 ICU beds, a 99% bed occupancy rate, and 100% ICU occupancy.
He also shared that the institute now has two functional Bone Marrow Transplant units, with 12 BMTs completed, and two additional BMT units will be established through CSR support. The institute also commissioned NAT blood testing and a blood irradiator, inaugurated by Chief Minister, Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, significantly improving transfusion safety for immune compromised and sickle cell patients, and marking the first such facility in a government set-up in Central India. He added that AIIMS Nagpur has performed 24,882 surgeries, completed 52 kidney transplants, 10 bone marrow transplants, and 29 corneal transplants, and has conducted 4,850 PET scans, demonstrating the institute’s expanding capacity for advanced tertiary care.
The Director also highlighted the institute’s academic achievements, including 26 ICMR-STS scholarships, 11 ICMR MD/MS thesis grants, and significant growth in academic programs with 29 MD/MS courses, 15 DM/MCh super-specialty programs, and 46 functional departments. Regulatory approval for liver transplantation has been obtained, and preparations for launching the heart transplant program is in the pipeline. He further noted that the institute was among the first AIIMS to secure entry-level NABH accreditation, and is now progressing towards achieving full NABH accreditation within this year. He reiterated the institute’s commitment to delivering accessible, affordable high-quality, and patient-centric care, particularly benefitting economically disadvantaged populations and reaching underserved regions across Central India.
AIIMS Nagpur has also strengthened its commitment to student and staff welfare through dedicated mentalwell-being initiatives, including the establishment of the Student Wellness Clinic and a 24×7 control-room helpline to support both students and faculty members.
The Guest of Honour, Dr Paithankar, in his address, spoke about the rapid advancements transforming healthcare, driven by innovation, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence. He highlighted the emergence of virtual healthcare and the evolving nature of clinical acumen in diagnosis and management. Chief Guest, Dr. Anant Pandhare, President, AIIMS Nagpur, encouraged faculty, staff, and students to consistently give their best, assuring them of his full support wherever institutional needs arise.
The event also witnessed the official release of the Institute Magazine, “Abhigyanam” and the recognition of academic excellence among students. The outstanding MBBS and Nursing students were felicitated for their exemplary performance in the First and Second Professional MBBS Examinations and the B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing Professional Examinations. The formal vote of thanks, was delivered by Dean, Academics, Dr Mrunal Phatak.
