Since August 2019, Government of India is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal, in partnership with States/ UTs, to make provision of safe and adequate tap water supply to every rural household of the country. At the start of JJM in August 2019, only 3.23 crore (16.7%) rural households were reported to have tap water connections. So far, as reported by States/ UTs, as on 01.12.2025, around 12.51 crore additional rural households have been provided with tap water connections under JJM. Thus, as on 01.12.2025, out of 19.36 crore rural households in the country, more than 15.75 crore (81.36%) rural households are reported to have tap water connections.
The details of reported utilization of central and state share under JJM, state-wise, year-wise and category-wise, are available in public domain on JJM Dashboard which can be accessed using the weblink given below:

To achieve 100 percent coverage through continued implementation of mission with focus on quality of infrastructure and O&M of rural piped water supply schemes for long term sustainability and citizen centric water service delivery, Hon'ble Finance Minister during budget speech 2025 announced extension of JJM until 2028 with enhanced outlay.
‘Drinking Water’ is a state subject, and hence, the responsibility of planning, approval, implementation, operation and maintenance (O&M) of drinking water supply schemes, including those under the JJM, lies with State/UT Governments. The Government of India supports the states by providing technical and financial assistance. All States/UTs have been advised to put a comprehensive Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Policy in place with provisions for handing over of schemes to GPs/VWSCs, empowering them to levy user charges, engaging women SHGs for the collection of user charges, and undertaking O&M, and ensuring sufficient financing of O&M.
The information was provided by THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI SHRI V. SOMANNA in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
