BIS: Bolstering India’s Quality and Growth through Standards

When we buy a product, build a home, or use everyday essentials, we rarely stop to think about who ensures their quality and safety. Quietly working behind the scenes is an organisation that has shaped India’s industrial journey for decades—the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
BIS is India’s national body for setting standards. It was earlier known as the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) and was renamed Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in 1986. Its role is simple yet powerful: to make sure products and services used by people are safe, reliable, and of good quality.

Most Indians are familiar with the ISI Mark, which assures product safety. Beyond this, BIS also certifies management systems, hallmark for gold and silver jewellery, and runs compulsory registration for electronic products to protect consumers. Through these efforts, BIS helps industries grow responsibly while safeguarding public interest.
Supporting Industries That Built the Nation
Over the years, BIS has played an important role in strengthening key Indian industries. Two notable examples are the pump industry and the cement industry—both of which are closely linked to everyday life.
Coimbatore’s Pump Industry, one of the oldest industrial sectors in the country, has long benefited from BIS guidance. As agriculture expanded in the 1970s, the use of irrigation pumps increased rapidly, leading to heavy consumption of electricity and fuel. To address this, BIS introduced efficiency guidelines for agricultural pumps as early as 1979. This helped save energy and encouraged manufacturers to produce better, more efficient pumps—much ahead of global practices.

The Cement Industry tells another story of progress guided by standards. After Independence, cement was a controlled commodity for many years. When it was liberalised in 1989, BIS ensured that quality was not compromised. By allowing the use of materials like fly ash and slag—by-products from other industries—BIS supported sustainable construction while maintaining strength and safety. This decision not only reduced waste but also helped India’s construction sector grow faster and greener.
A Quiet Partner in Progress
From farms to factories, and from homes to highways, BIS has silently supported India’s development. By setting clear standards and encouraging quality practices, it has helped industries innovate, conserve resources, and earn consumer trust.
Though its work often goes unnoticed, the impact of BIS is felt everywhere. It continues to be a strong pillar of India’s economy—ensuring that growth goes hand in hand with quality, safety, and sustainability.
79th BIS Foundation Day

On this momentous occasion of our 79th Foundation Day on 06th January 2026, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) extends heartfelt wishes and gratitude to every citizen of India. Your trust has been our guiding force since our journey began as the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) in 1947.
Together, we will continue to build a quality-conscious nation grounded in trust, resilience, and a pursuit of excellence.
