To mark the 79th BIS Foundation Day, BIS organized a Quality Conclave

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, has been serving industry and consumers since 1947. Formerly known as the Indian Standards Institution (ISI), BIS promotes quality through its Conformity Assessment, Laboratory Services, Hallmarking and other schemes. The ISI Mark has become synonymous with quality in Indian households, while the Hallmarking Scheme provides consumers with the highest assurance of gold purity.

In a significant step towards building quality consciousness among the youth, BIS has established more than 10,000 Standards Clubs across educational institutions in India, engaging teachers and students through various learning activities in the field of quality and standardization. BIS has been serving the state of Gujarat since 1971 through its Ahmedabad office. Over the years, industries in Gujarat have obtained more than 6,000 BIS licenses, accounting for over 12% of the total licenses nationwide, reflecting the state's strong commitment to quality, innovation and compliance with Indian Standards.

To mark the 79th BIS Foundation Day, BIS organized a Quality Conclave at Jibaben Patel Memorial Auditorium, IIT Gandhinagar, on 06 January 2026. The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Shri Ramanbhai Bhikhabhai Solanki, Hon'ble Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Government of Gujarat, along with Shri Sumit Sengar, Director & Head, BIS Ahmedabad, and Prof. Rajat Moona, Director, IIT Gandhinagar.

Welcoming the dignitaries and participants, Shri Sumit Sengar highlighted the achievements of BIS over the past 78 years and emphasized the critical role of quality infrastructure and Indian Standards in achieving the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat @2047. Prof. Rajat Moona congratulated BIS on its Foundation Day and underscored its role in strengthening the national quality ecosystem through public-centric standards.

A message from the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendra Patel, highlighting the initiatives of Make in India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Zero Defect-Zero Effect, was read out by Shri Ajay Chandel, Scientist-C, BIS Ahmedabad. Shri Sunil Parekh, Chairman, CERC, stressed the importance of testing in ensuring quality and the key role of BIS in consumer protection. Dr. S. P. Singh, Director General, Kaushalya - The Skill University, emphasized the need to focus on quality along with quantity in manufacturing to achieve self-reliance.

Addressing the gathering, Hon'ble Minister Shri Ramanbhai Bhikhabhai Solanki highlighted the importance of Indian Standards in nation-building and congratulated BIS on its 79th Foundation Day. Shri Vipin Bhaskar, Joint Director, BIS Ahmedabad, presented an overview of BIS activities and initiatives. Smt. Anindita Mehta, CEO, Consumer Education and Research Centre, delivered a technical lecture on consumer product safety and the importance of strengthening consumer protection mechanisms.

The event also featured cultural performances by students of L.D. College of Engineering and technical presentations by industry representatives and stakeholder organizations, including the Gujarat Plywood Association. The conclave witnessed participation from dignitaries and stakeholders from diverse sectors. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Vipin Bhaskar, making the celebration a fitting tribute to the legacy and continued commitment of BIS towards quality and excellence.
