Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals conducts Industrial Safety Training Programme at Kolhapur

The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India, organized a Two-Day Training Programme on “Chemicals and Petrochemicals Industrial Safety” from 18th to 19th December 2025 at Kolhapur, with the objective of strengthening industrial safety practices, risk management, and regulatory compliance in the chemicals and petrochemicals sector, particularly for Major Accident Hazard (MAH) units.

The programme was inaugurated in the august presence (online mode) of Prof. (Dr.) Shishir Sinha, Director General, CIPET, as Chief Guest. The inaugural session was also graced by Shri Praveen B. Dhat, Assistant Commandant, 5th Unit, NDRF, Pune, as Guest of Honour, and Shri Rahul T., Vice President (Process Safety), M/s Laxmi Organics Industries Ltd., Mumbai, as Special Guest, Shri A. K. Rao, Director & Head, CIPET : CSTS, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) delivered the keynote address. The programme was coordinated by Shri Kirankumar V. Koli, Technical Officer, CIPET: CSTS, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad).

Addressing the participants, the dignitaries highlighted the critical importance of strict safety compliance, adoption of best practices, and preparedness to prevent industrial accidents, especially in high-risk chemical and petrochemical installations.

The training programme witnessed participation from over 100 delegates representing chemical and petrochemical industries, government organizations, and regulatory bodies. Technical sessions covered key areas such as safety precautions in exothermic chemical reactors; hazard identification and risk assessment methodologies including HAZAN, HAZOP, HIRA, and LOPA; Process Safety Management (PSM); use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); chemical labeling and Safety Data Sheets (SDS); hazardous waste management; environmental regulations; and fire and explosion safety with emergency preparedness measures.

Experts from Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Excel Industries Ltd., Gharda Chemicals Ltd., Laxmi Organics Ltd., Asian Paints, SMS Envirocare Ltd., and the College of Fire Engineering and Safety Management Kolhapur shared practical insights, case studies, and best industry practices through interactive sessions.

A key highlight of the programme was the Emergency Preparedness Mock Drill and Role Play conducted on 19th December 2025 by the College of Fire Engineering and Safety Management, Kolhapur, jointly with the Chief Fire Officer and Fire Department Team of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, demonstrating on-site and off-site emergency response planning for industrial units.

The programme concluded with a valedictory session, which included participant feedback and an interactive question-and-answer session. Shri Manish Ranbhise, Chief Fire Officer & Assistant Director (Maharashtra Fire Services), Fire & Disaster Management Department, Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, Kolhapur graced the valedictory programme.

The initiative was well appreciated by industry representatives and regulatory authorities, and is expected to contribute significantly towards strengthening the culture of safety, compliance, and disaster preparedness in the chemical and petrochemical industries.
