Bureau of Indian Standards organizes Jeweller Awareness Program at Madurai

A Jewellers Awareness Programme on BIS Hallmarking Scheme of Gold and Silver Jewellery was organized by Bureau of Indian Standards, Coimbatore Branch Office at Madurai Jeweller Association Building, Madurai on 09.01.2026. Around 120 members participated in the meeting.

Inaugral address was given by Smt G.Bhavani, Scientist F & Head, BIS, Coimbatore who welvythe participants and gave a detailed speech on History, evolution of Hallmarking Scheme in India and importance of Hallmarking of Gold and silver.

Program started with welcome address and Objective by Shri V.Ramesh, Director, BIS followed by presentation on programme by stating the even though BIS had launched the Hallmarking Scheme as early as in 2000 and further rationalized the Scheme by bringing down the fee as and simplifying the procedures towards Grant of Licence, the response from the jewelers needs improvement particularly where Hallmarking centers were not available. It was also insisted individually and through the association of all the districts, that to apply for the licence as soon as possible so as to avoid further implications.

Further, explained the Policy for Registration of jewellers, the procedure, list of documents to be submitted along with the application. Also the implication for not adhering to the legal requirement was also explained in detail, including BIS Act and regulations on Hallmarking.
