The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) marked a significant milestone in holistic patient care on 10th January 2026 with the launch of two specialized books during the inauguration of an Intensive Patient Counselling Program for children with Cleft Lip and Palate.
The books were officially released by Prof. Vir Singh Negi, Director of JIPMER, while reviewing the publications, emphasized the institute's commitment to providing not just surgical excellence but also the essential psychological support and knowledge required for long-term recovery. A program was held at the Department of Plastic Surgery for 20 families. Chief guest Dr Ravi Kumar Chittoria, Head of the Department, highlighted that education is a critical component of healing, stressing the need for such resources to train new mothers in the vital subject of nutrition. Guest of Honor Mrs. Pushpalatha, Officer In-charge of the Nursing Section, while addressing the gathering pressed on the need for specialised books for parents for such children, which will help them address such issues.
The two new publications, written in both Tamil and English, serve as comprehensive guides for families navigating the complexities of cleft care. "A Journey of Love and Nutrition" is authored by Mrs. Vijayageetha, Senior Nursing Officer and Cleft Counsellor, focusing on the nutritional and emotional needs of children born with cleft lip and palate. The second book, "Nursing Every Smile," authored by Project Coordinator Mrs. Rajeshwari, explores the clinical and rehabilitative journey of these children through the lens of specialized nutritional support. Both works feature unique hand-sketched illustrations by Miss Parkavi, Patient Counsellor and "Cleft Warrior" who, as a former patient herself, utilized her first-hand experience to bring the books to life.

Prof. Dr. Devi Prasad Mohapatra, Project Director of the Smile Train Cleft Project, announced that these books will be distributed free of cost to parents of children with cleft attending JIPMER Smile Train cleft Project, which has been operating at JIPMER since 2014. For the wider public, the books will be available for purchase on online platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart.
