TRAI Assesses Network Quality Across Trichy City and Adjoining Areas in the State of Tamil Nadu (Tamil Nadu Licensed Service Area)

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the findings of its Independent Drive Test (IDT) for the Tamil Nadu Licensed Service Area (LSA), covering Trichy City and adjoining areas, conducted in December 2025. The drive tests were carried out under the supervision of the TRAI Regional Office, Hyderabad, to assess real-world mobile network performance across diverse usage environments, including urban zones, institutional hotspots, and rural residential areas. Between 09 December 2025 and 12 December 2025, TRAI teams conducted detailed assessments covering a total of 371.3 km of drive tests across Trichy City, along with a 5.1 km walk test and evaluations at seven hotspot locations. The technologies assessed included 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G, reflecting the service experience of users across multiple handset capabilities. The findings of the IDT have been shared with all concerned Telecom Service Providers (TSPs).

Call Setup Success Rate (CSSR), Drop Call Rate (DCR), Call Setup Time (CST), Call Silence Rate, Speech Quality (MOS), and Coverage.

Call Setup Success Rate (Auto-selection mode: 5G/4G/3G/2G):
Airtel, BSNL, RJIL, and VIL recorded CSSR values of 100.00%, 90.51%, 97.65%, and 100.00%, respectively.
Poor Signal Strength during Voice Testing (Auto-selection mode: 5G/4G/3G/2G):
Observed at 0.39% for Airtel, 10.48% for BSNL, 0.96% for RJIL, and 2.99% for VIL along the city IDT route.
- Data Services:
Download and Upload Throughput, Latency, Jitter, Packet Drop Rate, and Video Streaming Delay.
Poor Signal Strength during Data Testing (Auto-selection mode: 5G/4G/3G/2G):
Observed at 6.45% for Airtel, 11.74% for BSNL, 6.07% for RJIL, and 6.73% for VIL along the city IDT route.

Data Download performance (Overall): Average download speed of Airtel (5G/4G) is 194.70 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 5.46 Mbps, RJIL (5G/4G) is 286.39 Mbps and VIL (4G/2G) is 24.85 Mbps.
Data Upload performance (Overall): Average upload speed of Airtel (5G/4G) is 33.36 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 6.29 Mbps, RJIL (5G/4G) is 28.52 Mbps and VIL (4G/2G) is 11.68 Mbps.
Latency (Overall): Airtel, BSNL, RJIL and VIL 50th percentile latency is 43.03 ms, 48.55 ms, 25.06 ms, 43.93 ms respectively.

In Trichy City, the assessment included the areas nearby Sethurapatti, Manikandam, Mannarpuram, MGR Nagar, Kulathur, Thuvakudi, Palpannai Junction, Lalgudi Road, Puvalur, Madakudi, Thiruppangali North, Tiruchirapalli Salem Main Road, Kulithalai, Kulumani and Sannasipatty etc.
Walk test at Trichy Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple and Trichy Central Railway Station.
TRAI also evaluated real-world conditions at 1. Arulmigu Jambukeswarar Temple 2. District Collector Office Trichy 3. IIM Trichy Library 4. Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital 5. NIT Trichy 6. Trichy Airport 7.Trichy Central Bus Stand in Trichy City to reflect stationary user experience.
