CAG and ICSSR Organise Colloquium on State Finances and Urban Governance in Maharashtra

A Colloquium jointly organised by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) and the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Mumbai Chapter, held on 23 January 2026 at the auditorium of the CAG’s Regional Capacity Building and Knowledge Institute (RCB&KI), Mumbai.
The Colloquium deliberated on two important themes, namely “State of the Finances of Maharashtra” and “Status of Governance in Urban Local Bodies of Maharashtra”. The discussions focused on fiscal management, governance challenges, and accountability mechanisms at the State and urban local body levels.

Eminent speakers at the Colloquium included Shri D. Jaisankar, IAAS, Principal Accountant General (Audit)-I, Maharashtra; Shri Sourabh Vhatkar, IAAS, Deputy Accountant General, Office of the Principal Accountant General (Audit)-I, Maharashtra; Prof. S. Chandrasekhar, Professor, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai; and Prof. Ashima Goyal, Emeritus Professor, IGIDR, Mumbai.
The event was attended by eminent academicians, students, and research scholars, facilitating a rich exchange of perspectives between auditors and the academic community. The Colloquium was honoured by the presence of Prof. Dhananjay Singh, Member Secretary, ICSSR, and Ms. Geetali Tare, Additional Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General (Western Region).

The Mumbai Chapter Colloquium forms part of the ongoing CAG–ICSSR Colloquium Series, which aims to strengthen engagement between the Supreme Audit Institution and the academic community. Earlier Colloquia under the series were held on 11 November 2025 and 15 December 2025 at the CAG Headquarters, New Delhi, focusing on themes such as State Finances, Audit of the Health Sector, and Public Finances of States.
The CAG–ICSSR collaboration seeks to enhance public understanding of audit findings, fiscal governance, and accountability, and to promote informed academic discourse on issues of public finance and governance. As part of this collaboration, the CAG Research Article Competition has also been instituted to encourage scholarly research and analysis in the areas of audit, public finance, governance, and accountability.
