IIT Gandhinagar and TECC Forge New Frontiers in India–Taiwan Academic Collaboration

Posted On: 04 FEB 2026 4:40PM by PIB Ahmedabad

The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) and the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre (TECC) reaffirmed their commitment to fostering academic and cultural exchange through the Taiwan Education Centre on the IITGN campus on February 03, 2026.

TECC will provide a qualified Mandarin instructor, while IITGN will offer office and classroom facilities. The collaboration also supports the development of teaching methodologies and academic programs, fostering deeper engagement between Taiwan and India.

Highlighting the growing importance of educational cooperation, Ms Jill Lai, Director of the Education Division, TECC in India, said that education remains a key pillar of long-term bilateral engagement. She noted that Taiwan currently collaborates with numerous Indian institutions and is keen to expand these partnerships through short-term programs, academic exchanges, and collaborative initiatives.

“Education is the foundation of sustainable cooperation between Taiwan and India. Through collaboration with universities, faculty, and students, we aim to strengthen institutional ties while fostering cultural understanding and innovation-driven growth,” Ms Lai said.

Highlighting semiconductors as a key area of convergence between India and Taiwan, Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IIT Gandhinagar, said that “Taiwan’s global leadership in semiconductor manufacturing offers significant opportunities for collaboration in education, research, and talent development.” He noted that Indian institutions are increasingly engaging with Taiwanese universities through student exchanges, joint programmes, and research partnerships.

Prof Moona added that structured short-term academic exchanges and focused programmes in semiconductor education could gradually evolve into long-term collaborations involving academia, industry, and government, thereby strengthening India–Taiwan ties in this strategic domain.

Prof Moona emphasised the need for effective policies to address challenges and identify priority areas for India–Taiwan cooperation. Reiterating India’s strategic importance, he highlighted the potential to strengthen institutional ties, build capacity, and explore future collaboration opportunities.

The discussion also focused on enhancing student mobility between India and Taiwan, including opportunities for Indian students to pursue advanced studies at Taiwanese institutions. Emphasis was placed on aligning academic programmes, credit frameworks, and institutional preparedness to facilitate smoother exchanges. The expansion of short-term exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, and faculty engagement, particularly in technology-driven areas, was highlighted. A supportive ecosystem covering academic assistance, campus life, and cultural integration was recognized as essential for turning short-term exchanges into lasting academic partnerships.

“Language remains a key enabler of meaningful academic and professional exchange. Integrating practical language training into academic programmes can significantly enhance student mobility and long-term collaboration between India and Taiwan,” said Prof Amit Prashant, Dean, External Relations, IITGN

Referring to the role of institutional engagement, Prof Prashant said initiatives such as Taiwan Day at IIT Gandhinagar can meaningfully contribute to exchange programmes only when backed by direct interaction. “Real collaboration begins when people sit across the table and engage with each other. Such initiatives become effective when they lead to sustained, face-to-face academic engagement,” he said.
