The delegation of media representatives from Karnataka, currently on a study tour to Meghalaya, today visited the beautiful tourist destination of Shnongpdeng village, located on the border of Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi and Jaintia Hills districts.

On the 3rd day of the Meghalaya tour organized by the PIB Bengaluru, the team visited the Umngot River, which holds the distinction of being Asia’s cleanest river. This village is world-famous for its transparent waters. While boating here, the media representatives were thrilled to witness the rare sight of stones and fish at the bottom of the river being clearly visible. The unique feature here is the sensation that the boats are floating in the air rather than on the water.

Sharing a border with the international boundary of India and Bangladesh, this village is of immense significance from a tourism perspective. The media team engaged in a dialogue with the locals and gathered information about the lifestyle in the border region and the role they play in environmental conservation.

Shnongpdeng is not just about natural beauty; it has become a household name among tourists. A special highlight is that the entire tourist destination is managed and maintained by the local administration and village committees. The cleanliness and systematic arrangement here serve as a model for many. For tourists, there are facilities such as tents and home stays on the banks of the river. One can savor delicious local Khasi and Jaintia style food and refreshments here. Along with boating, there is an opportunity to walk on a ropeway bridge.

Boasting dense green hills, captivating waterfalls and a serene atmosphere, this spot has emerged as a major attraction of Meghalaya state tourism. Following this, the media team visited the India-Bangladesh border and gathered information regarding the situation there.
