The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, organised a Jewellers Awareness Programme on Hallmarking at Arcot, Ranipet District on 24 February 2026. Ranipet being a non-mandatory district according to Hallmarking Regulations, the programme aimed to enhance awareness among jewellers on BIS Hallmarking standards, regulatory requirements and the digital services offered by BIS for seamless compliance.
The programme witnessed active participation from jewellers and representatives of local jewellers’ associations from Ranipet district.
Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist–F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, addressed the participants and outlined the objectives of the programme. He highlighted BIS’s continued efforts to strengthen consumer protection through standardisation, certification and mandatory hallmarking of gold and silver jewellery.
Emphasising the current market scenario, Shri S. D. Dayanand stated, “With the steady rise in gold prices, consumers are making significant financial investments while purchasing jewellery. In such a scenario, BIS Hallmarking plays a crucial role in protecting the interests of buyers by assuring purity and quality. At the same time, hallmarking safeguards the credibility of genuine jewellers by creating a transparent and trustworthy marketplace. Strict adherence to hallmarking norms strengthens consumer confidence and enhances the reputation of the jewellery trade.”
He further underscored the responsibility of jewellers in complying with statutory provisions under the BIS Act and Hallmarking Regulations, and in maintaining declared purity standards.
A detailed Technical Presentation was delivered by Shri Gowththam BJ, Scientist-D / Joint Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office, wherein he explained the key provisions of the Hallmarking Scheme, regulatory responsibilities of jewellers, essential requirements under the relevant Indian Standards for gold and silver jewellery, hallmarking procedures and quality control mechanisms. He elaborated on the significance of HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification), compliance expectations, inspection procedures and the dos and don’ts for jewellers to ensure smooth and error-free operations. He informed the gathering about the different grades covered in Indian Standards for Gold (IS 1417) and for Silver (IS 2112), including the introduction of HUID Marking for Silver Jewellery since 1st Sep 2025.
During the session, Shri Gowththam BJ also demonstrated BIS’s digital services including the e-BIS portal, which facilitates online applications and other regulatory services. Participants were encouraged to actively use the BIS Care App for consumer grievance redressal, licence verification and product authentication. Jewellers were also urged to subscribe to Standards Watch, BIS’s bi-weekly bulletin providing updates on standards development, revisions and drafts open for public comments.
An interactive Open House session followed, where participants raised queries relating to hallmarking centre coordination, HUID generation, compliance requirements, penalty provisions, documentation, portal usage and inspection mechanisms. The queries were clarified in detail and participants were assured of continuous guidance and support from BIS for effective implementation of hallmarking in the district.
The programme reinforced BIS’s commitment to strengthening the hallmarking ecosystem in Ranipet district by equipping jewellers with the necessary knowledge, regulatory clarity and digital tools to ensure quality, compliance and consumer trust.
