Dept of Telecommunication initiatives on providing mobile connectivity and broadband services to rural and remote areas of Tamilnadu and Puducherry

Under 4G Saturation Project of Digital Bharat Nidhi Scheme 256 Sites (upto Phase IV) have been commissioned as on date and another 45 and 28 sites have been sanctioned in Phase V and Phase VI respectively which are currently under process.

The BharatNet Project being executed by TANFINET, aims to provide broadband connectivity to all Gram Panchayats (GPs). As on date out of 12525 GPs 11998 GPs are lit and work is in progress at 527 locations.

In Puducherry all GPs have already been provided broadband connectivity under Bharatnet Project. Further, Amended Bharatnet Programme (ABP) is being executed in Puducherry to upgrade the connectivity from linear to ring topology for all GPs and work is in progress at Karaikal and Villianur Blocks and 20 route KM of OFC laid.

Field survey of 94 villages/hamlets was conducted by DoT along with Telecom Service Providers and 51 villages/hamlets not having mobile coverage have been recommended to Digital Bharat Nidhi for installation of towers to provide network coverage to the uncovered remote hamlets.
