National Science Day celebrated at CSIR Campus, Chennai

National Science Day was celebrated with great passion at CSIR campus on 6 March 2026 by CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (CSIR-SERC) and CSIR Madras Complex (CMC).

 

Dr. N. Anandavalli, Director, CSIR-SERC and Coordinating Director, CMC, presided over the National Science Day function.  Dr. K.Muthumani, Chief Scientist (Retd.) CSIR-SERC, Dean (Retd.) SCE, VIT, Managing Director, Structflix, Principal Advisor, Centre for Urbanization, Buildings & Environment [CUBE], was the Chief Guest for the function.

 

Dr.  Anandavalli, in her presidential address highlighted the impact of science and technology in our everyday lives and  mentioned that the power of Science is to see the truth in it.  She also mentioned the quote of the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, our former President that Science should help in the improvement of society and should not in destroying it. She also mentioned that this year theme of National Science Day is “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat.” The theme aligns scientific advancement with India’s vision of becoming a developed nation while recognising the role of women researchers and innovators. She also expressed that more and more women to choose science to accelerate the benefit of science in building a greater and stronger nation.

 

Dr. A. Ramachandra Murthy, Chief Scientist of CSIR-SERC, formally introduced the chief guest to the audience. Dr. Muthumani delivered the National Science Day Lecture on “Beyond the Epicenter: Tales from an Earthquake Engine”.   He gave a brief knowledge on what is earthquake and also shared his journey in bringing out the Advanced Seismic Testing  and Research (AsTAR) laboratory in CSIR-SERC. 

 

As a part of Science Day celebrations and to inculcate the aptitude for scientific research in young minds, the third edition of  Dr. N. Lakshmanan Memorial Science Quiz Competition was organized at the CSIR Campus on 27 February 2026.  This competition is conducted exclusively for the Greater Chennai Corporation School students.  The prize-winning schools were awarded trophies, and the prize-winning teams were given shields and prize money by the Chief Guest.

 

As a part of world Hindi Day celebrations, various competitions were held for staff of CSIR-SERC and CMC.  Dr. Asha G. Nair, Hindi Officer, CSIR-SERC announced the winners name. The chief guest gave away the prizes for the winners of CSIR-SERC and CMC for the World Hindi Day Competition.

Dr. C. Kumaravelu, Scientist – G & Scientist-in-charge, CEERI Unit proposed a vote of thanks.
