CHANDERI, MADHYA PRADESHIn a landmark initiative spearheaded by Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, a new chapter has begun for the weavers of Chanderi. A strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the Handloom Park between the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) and the District Archaeology, Tourism and Culture Council (DATCC), Ashoknagar, to launch "Project Padma Doree".

The agreement was executed by Shri Mara Kocho, Managing Director of NEHHDC, and Shri Saket Malviya, District Collector and Chairman of DATCC.

A Fusion of Heritage and Innovation

"Project Padma Doree" is set to introduce a premium line of textiles that blends the rustic, "Ahimsa" (non-violent) Eri Silk of the North East with the world-renowned Chanderi Weaving technique.

· Product Range: The collaboration will produce high-end sarees, suits, dupattas, and fabric yardage.

· Double-GI Synergy: This initiative merges two iconic Geographical Indication (GI) products, creating a "Double-GI" heritage brand that appeals to the global ethical luxury market.

· Implementation: The project will be managed locally through the District Archaeology, Tourism and Culture Council (DATCC).

Economic Empowerment and Artisan Growth

The initiative is designed to open new doors for economic development and artisan welfare:

· Income Boost: The project targets a 20-25% increase in artisan income within the next 12 to 24 months.

· Broad Impact: By connecting local artisans with the 8 states represented by NEHHDC, the project seeks to provide new employment opportunities and global market access.

· Collaboration: Future production will involve close coordination with master weavers, weavers, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to ensure technical excellence.

Strategic Vision for the Future

Under Managing Director Shri Mara Kocho, NEHHDC envisions a self-sustaining ecosystem for these crafts:

· Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV): The project is slated to transition into a permanent entity, "NER-MP Handloom Fusion Private Limited," beyond the initial five-year term.

· Artisan Ownership: This future SPV is designed to be weaver-led, with 60% equity held by the artisans themselves to ensure long-term financial independence from government funding.

The meeting was attended by several key officials and weaver representatives, including Zila Panchayat CEO Rajesh Jain, SDM Manish Dhanagar, Assistant Director N. Gupta, and weaver representatives Arun Somani, Ashok Lalmani, Bahubali Jain, Sona Koli, and Sufer Allahabadi.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia commended this important MoU between Eri silk and Chanderi weaving, stating that it will not only create new employment opportunities but also give global recognition to the rich traditional crafts of both regions.

He highlighted that the coming together of the Northeastern and Chanderi traditions to create innovative products like ‘Padma Dori’ is a beautiful example of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.’ He also extended his heartfelt congratulations to all weaver brothers and sisters, noting that their hard work will now reach greater heights and wider recognition.
