The Department of Orthopaedics at JIPMER successfully organised a two-day “Basic Ilizarov Workshop”. The programme marked a significant academic and clinical milestone, reinforcing JIPMER’s role as a leading centre for advanced orthopaedic training in South India.

The workshop was organised by the Department of Orthopaedics, JIPMER, under the leadership of Dr. Suresh Gandhi B, Professor and Head of the Department, who served as the Organising Chairman, and Dr. Pasupathy P, Organising Secretary. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from nearly 50 young orthopaedic surgeons and postgraduate trainees representing various states across South India. The event featured a well-structured blend of didactic lectures and hands-on training sessions, enabling participants to actively engage with faculty and gain practical insights into the Ilizarov technique. The seamless execution of the workshop reflected the dedicated efforts of the organising team, faculty, and staff of the Department.

A distinguished panel of 10 eminent faculty members from across the country contributed to the academic sessions. Notably, Dr. Mangal Parihar (Mumbai) and Dr. Vasudevan P. N. (Kerala) served as the lead faculty, bringing extensive expertise and clinical experience to the programme.

The Ilizarov technique is a specialised orthopaedic method used to reconstruct bones, increase bone length, and correct deformities. It involves the use of a circular external frame made of rings, wires, and rods that is attached outside the limb. This device gradually applies controlled tension to the bone, which stimulates the growth of new bone tissue — a process known as distraction osteogenesis. Developed by Dr. Gavriil Ilizarov, this method is widely used for treating complex fractures, non-healing bones, limb length differences, and deformities.

The workshop provided comprehensive training in the application of this technique for managing complex fractures, limb deformities, and limb length discrepancies. By strengthening the skills of young orthopaedic professionals, the initiative is expected to significantly enhance access to specialised orthopaedic care in diverse regions, ultimately benefiting the public at large.

The Department of Orthopaedics, JIPMER, remains committed to advancing orthopaedic education through a structured training pathway—beginning with foundational programmes such as the Basic Ilizarov Workshop and progressing towards advanced-level courses in the coming years. This initiative aims to build sustained expertise in complex limb reconstruction and deformity correction techniques among orthopaedic professionals.
