The Ministry of Home Affairs has invited recommendations for the 'Jeevan Raksha Padak' series of awards for the year 2026. These awards are presented for meritorious acts of a human nature in saving the life of a person(s) in incidents such as drowning, accidents, fire incidents, electrocution, landslides, animal attacks, and rescue operations in mines. These awards are given in three categories:
- Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak: For conspicuous courage in saving life under circumstances of very great danger to the life of the rescuer.
- Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak: For courage and promptitude in saving life under circumstances of great danger to the life of the rescuer.
- Jeevan Raksha Padak: For courage and promptitude in saving life under circumstances of grave bodily injury to the rescuer.
Eligibility and Selection Process: Persons from all walks of life are eligible for these awards. Members of the Armed Forces, Police Forces, and recognized Fire Services are also eligible. Notably, the "Prime Minister's Police Medal for Life Saving" has now been merged into the "Jeevan Raksha Padak," hence members of CAPF/CPO and Police Forces are also eligible. This award can also be conferred posthumously.
Every year, recommendations are invited from State Governments, Union Territory Administrations, Ministries/Departments of the Government of India, and other authorities. These recommendations are scrutinized by a high-level Award Committee, which submits its recommendations to the Prime Minister and the President. Upon approval by the President, the winners are presented with a medal and a certificate along with a monetary allowance.
Important Conditions for Nomination:
- Time Limit: The Award Committee considers only those recommendations made within two years from the date of the act of courage. Therefore, for the year 2026, no recommendation should be sent where the date of the act is prior to October 01, 2024.
- Application Process: Recommendations can only be sent through the online medium on the National Awards Portal (URL: https://www.awards.gov.in).
- Details: The online form must include a citation (maximum 250 words) sequentially describing the courage shown, the risk involved, and the sequence of the incident by the rescuer.
- Documents: A scanned copy of the 'Character and Antecedents Verification Certificate' signed and stamped by the recommending authority must be uploaded. Google Translator can be used to write the person's name in Hindi.
- Deadline: Recommendations for the 2026 awards must be sent by September 30, 2026.
If any authority does not have a User ID or Password, they can obtain the details by emailing sopub[at]nic[dot]in from their official government email ID. Concerned authorities are requested to send the nominations of eligible persons who have performed acts of courage on time so that their service can be properly recognized.
