IIT Madras Achieves Deep-Tech Milestone: 112 Startups Incubated and 431 Patents Filed in FY 2025-26

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has reinforced its leadership in deep-tech entrepreneurship and translational research by incubating 112 startups and filing 431 patents during the financial year 2025-26. Under its ‘Startup Shatam’ mission, the IITM Incubation Cell (IITMIC) surpassed the 500-startup mark, reaching a total portfolio of 567 startups collectively valued at Rs. 74,100 Crore. A landmark milestone this year was the IPO of Ather Energy, the first publicly listed company from the portfolio.
Announcing the acheivements during the World IP Day celebrations, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, stated, “These milestones reflect the culture of innovation that has taken deep roots across IIT Madras. The combination of startup creation and strong patent activity demonstrates our commitment to translating research into real impact.”
The Institute’s robust IP ecosystem saw 352 Indian and 79 international patents filed this year. Prof. Manu Santhanam, Dean (ICSR), added, “IIT Madras has built an end-to-end support system that enables faculty, students, and researchers to navigate the IP journey efficiently.”

Reflecting on the growth, Dr. Tamaswati Ghosh, CEO, IITMIC, noted, “FY26 has been a year of consolidation, with 112 startups incubated while maintaining a strong focus on quality and deep-tech orientation.” Prof. Mohanasankar Sivaprakasam, Faculty-in-charge, IITMIC, concluded, “We remain committed to supporting startups that solve complex challenges through cutting-edge technologies and enabling them to scale globally.”
The newly incubated startups span critical sectors including AI, robotics, aerospace, and climate technologies, with over 60% founded by external entrepreneurs, advancing the ‘IITM for All’ vision.
Notable start-ups from the IIT Madras ecosystem include Ather Energy, Uniphore, MediBuddy, HyperVerge, Agnikul Cosmos, Planys Technologies, Detect Technologies, GalaxEye and NeoMotion, among others.

Prof. V. Kamakoti presented JC BOSE awards to faculty and students in recognition of their contributions to maximum patent filings and commercialisation over five financial years (2020-21 to 2024-25).
