DGTS, CBIC Highlights Technology-Driven Governance at National Technology Day 2026 in Navi Mumbai

Officers of the Directorate General of Taxpayer Services (DGTS), Mumbai Zonal Unit (MZU), under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Ministry of Finance, participated in the National Technology Day 2026 celebrations organised by the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG), New Panvel, Navi Mumbai on 11 May 2026.

National Technology Day is observed annually on 11 May to commemorate India’s major scientific and technological achievements, including the Pokhran-II nuclear tests and the maiden flight of the Hansa-3 aircraft in 1998. The 2026 theme, “Responsible Innovation for Inclusive Growth,” highlights ethical and inclusive technological advancement towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

The programme was organised by the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG), an autonomous research institution under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The event was attended by eminent dignitaries including Prof. A. P. Dimri, Director, IIG Mumbai, Dr. Sunil Kumar Singh, Director, National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa, as Chief Guest and Dr. Uttam Kumar Sinha, Senior Fellow, Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), as Guest of Honour.

The DGTS delegation was led by Shri Sumit Kumar, Principal Additional Director General, DGTS, MZU, who attended the programme as Guest of Honour. Addressing the gathering, Shri Sumit Kumar highlighted the transformative role of technology in governance, transparency, accountability, and citizen-centric service delivery. He observed that GST represents one of the world’s largest technology-driven tax reforms supported by systems such as e-invoicing, e-way bills, online return filing, analytics-based compliance monitoring, ICEGATE, GSTN, faceless Customs procedures, and integrated digital platforms. He stated that these initiatives have significantly enhanced ease of doing business, taxpayer facilitation, transparency, and voluntary compliance.

Shri Sumit Kumar also elaborated upon the outreach role of DGTS in organising seminars, webinars, workshops, awareness programmes, and academic collaborations for taxpayers, students, professionals, and industry stakeholders.

The event reflected the importance of collaboration between scientific institutions and governance organisations in promoting innovation, knowledge-sharing, and technology-driven inclusive national development.
