BIS conducted raid in Packaged Drinking Water Manufacturing Units at Tiruppur

Officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Coimbatore Branch Office, conducted enforcement raid (search and seizure) operations on 13.05.2026 at M/s. Murugan Minerals, Mannarai, Tirupur, and M/s. Sree Ganapathy Foods, Ganapathipalayam, Tirupur.

The operation was carried out by two teams of officials. One team comprised Shri Rino John S, Scientist-E/Director and Shri A. Arivazhagan, while the other team comprised Shri Vinith Kumar G, Scientist-E/Director and                                               Shri Gautam Chand Soni, Scientist-C/Deputy Director. During the search conducted under the provisions of Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016, the units were found to be engaged in the manufacturing, storage, and sale of Packaged Drinking Water without possessing a valid BIS licence, as the licence had expired.

During the course of the operation, Packaged Drinking Water in 20 Litre PET Jars & Stickers/ Labels were seized for violation of the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.

Shri Ramesh K, Director & Head of the Coimbatore Branch Office, stated that appropriate action would be initiated by the Bureau of Indian Standards Coimbatore Branch Office against the offender under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. He further informed that, as per Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016, the offence is punishable, for the first contravention, with imprisonment up to two years or with a fine not less than Rs. 2 lakhs which may extend up to 10 times the value of the goods or articles manufactured, sold, offered for sale, or marked with the Standard Mark, or with both.

Consumers are advised to verify Packaged Drinking Water supplied to them are having valid BIS licence and bearing a genuine ISI Mark. Before purchasing, consumers can verify the validity of the licence through the BIS Care App using the CM/L number printed on the product.

Manufacturers and suppliers are expected to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. Any misuse of the ISI Mark, use of expired licences, or misleading representation of BIS certification not only compromises consumer safety but also attracts penal action under the law.

BIS continuously monitors such violations and urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious products or misuse of the ISI Mark to the nearest BIS office or through the BIS Care App.
