The Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, held a discussion on 'One Nation, One Election' in Bengaluru today. The Chairman of the Committee, Shri P. P. Chaudhary, interacted with Padma Awardees and media representatives to gather their views on 'One Nation, One Election'.

Speaking during the discussion, Shri P. P. Chaudhary noted that 5 to 6 State Assembly elections take place in the country every year. This directly and indirectly affects people in different sectors. When an election takes place in one state, it also impacts other states. With this in mind, putting 'One Nation, One Election' into practice will reduce the workload of teachers, police officers, and other election staff. The Committee’s goal is to ensure everyone across the country, including labourers and migrants, get a chance to exercise their right to vote. Therefore, holding elections simultaneously, but in several phases, will allow everyone to take part in the festival of democracy, he stated.

Holding safe and secure elections requires coordination for the Election Commission, the Home Ministry for EVM machine preparation, postal ballots, and more. If the Committee’s proposals satisfy everyone, it will be easier to implement 'One Nation, One Election'. This will also help cut down election costs by a large amount, he added.

He emphasized that just as India celebrates unity in diversity, its political landscape is equally varied. Elected representatives from different regions play a vital role in preserving and promoting their local culture and heritage, he noted. During the event, Padma Awardees and media representatives shared their thoughts and opinions.
