Posted On: 21 MAY 2026 6:49PM by PIB Chennai

The Press Council of India, a statutory quasi-judicial authority constituted under the Press Council Act, 1978, with the mandate of preserving the freedom of the press and maintaining and improving press standards in India, is undergoing reconstitution. Following the conclusion of the Council's 14th term on October 5, 2024, an advertisement notice was previously issued on June 9, 2024, inviting claims from eligible Associations of Persons under Section 5(3)(a), (b), and (c) of the Act. However, no claims were filed under Section 5(3)(c) during that period.

Consequently, the Chairperson of the Council, in terms of Section 5(4) of the Act read with the Press Council (Procedure for Notification of Associations of Persons) Rules, 2021, has invited fresh claims under Section 5(3)(c) of the Press Council Act, 1978, for notification in the Official Gazette. Claims are invited from eligible Associations of Persons who manage news agencies, or from the News Agencies themselves, from all over the country for notification in the Official Gazette.

The official advertisement regarding this invitation has been released in newspapers pan-India on May 17, 2026. Eligible entities must ensure that their claims, submitted in a sealed envelope, reach the Chairperson, Press Council of India, on or before June 19, 2026, by 5:00 PM. The detailed advertisement can also be accessed directly on the official website of the Council at https://www.presscouncil.nic.in/.
