The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report of a fire incident at a private hospital in the Dehradun district, Uttarakhand on May 20, 2026. Reportedly, 14 patients were rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Among them, a female patient was declared dead while four others were discharged.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued notices to the Uttarakhand Chief Secretary and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

According to the media report, carried on May 21, 2026, the blast occurred due to a short circuit in the air conditioner, after which the fire started spreading.
