BIS conducted “Manak Manthan” programme on Single Phase A.C. Induction Motors

The Bureau of Indian Standards, Coimbatore Branch Office, organized a “Manak Manthan” programme – a Technical Discussion on IS 996:2025 – Single Phase A.C. Induction Motors for General Purpose (Fourth Revision) on 26 May 2026 at SIEMA Hall, Coimbatore.

  

The programme was organized to create awareness among manufacturers, industry stakeholders, testing laboratories and other interested participants regarding the latest revision of the Indian Standard for Single Phase A.C. Induction Motors for General Purpose. The session aimed to promote better understanding of the standard requirements, encourage quality compliance and facilitate interaction between BIS officials and industry representatives.

A special address was delivered by Shri Ramesh K, Scientist-E/Director & Head, BIS Coimbatore. During his address, he emphasized the benefits of obtaining BIS Certification for product covered under IS 996 and encouraged manufacturers to obtain for certification, particularly highlighting the advantages available for MSMEs. He also conveyed the testing facility relaxations and support provisions extended to MSME industries.

An overview of BIS activities, certification schemes and standardization initiatives, along with the programme objectives, was presented by Shri Gautam Chand Soni, Scientist-C/Deputy Director, BIS Coimbatore.

The technical presentation on IS 996:2025 was delivered by Shri Jatin Tiwari, Scientist-C/ Deputy Director, BIS Headquarters, New Delhi highlighting the amendment to IS 996 2025 which is in wide draft circulation. The session covered important revisions and technical requirements of the standard. The programme also featured an interactive open house discussion, wherein participants raised queries, shared practical difficulties faced during implementation and discussed various aspects related to compliance with the revised standard.

The “Manak Manthan” programme served as an effective platform for technical interaction and knowledge sharing among stakeholders of the electrical motor manufacturing sector. BIS reiterated its commitment towards strengthening standardization, product quality, safety and consumer confidence through active industry participation of more than 25 participants.
