As part of the ongoing ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan-2026’, an awareness and farmer interaction programme was organized today at Lingdum, East Sikkim, by the AICRP on Ergonomics and Safety in Agriculture, Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, College of Agricultural Engineering & Post Harvest Technology (CAEPHT), Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Ranipool, Gangtok.
The programme focused on safeguarding agricultural land through Sikkim’s organic and natural farming practices, promotion of soil health, efficient utilization of farm resources, and safe operation of agricultural machinery. Farmers from the locality actively participated in the event and interacted with scientists on sustainable farming practices suited to the hilly ecosystem of the State.
During the programme, demonstrations were conducted on the safe use of small farm machinery and on reducing farm accidents. Farmers were encouraged to adopt eco-friendly cultivation methods, conserve natural resources, and strengthen climate-resilient agriculture in line with Sikkim’s vision of maintaining its status as India’s leading organic farming State.
Addressing the gathering, the organizing team highlighted that protecting agricultural land is essential not only for food security but also for preserving the fragile mountain ecosystem of the Himalayan region. Emphasis was laid on natural resource conservation, soil health management, water conservation, and the adoption of appropriate farm technologies to enhance productivity without compromising environmental sustainability.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from farmers, rural youth, and local stakeholders, who appreciated the initiative and expressed their commitment to preserving agricultural land and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
The programme was organized under the month-long ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan-2026’, being observed across the country from 1–30 June 2026, with the objective of creating awareness on the protection of agricultural land, sustainable farming, and natural resource conservation. It emphasized natural farming, soil and water conservation, and the safe use of agricultural machinery for sustainable hill agriculture.
