ICAR-NEH Sikkim Centre Organizes Farmer–Scientist Interaction under “Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav” at Chalamthang with Khet Bachao Abhiyan Theme

ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region, Sikkim Centre, organized a Farmer–Scientist Interaction under the “Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav” (MGMG) programme with the theme Khet Bachao Abhiyan at Chalamthang, Namchi District, on June 8, 2026.
The programme focused on promoting balanced crop nutrition, efficient resource use, and climate-resilient agricultural practices through direct engagement between scientists and farmers. Around 40 farmers participated in the event.

The programme was led by Dr. Ashok Kumar, Head of Regional Centre, along with four scientists from the institute. Dr. Ashok Kumar highlighted opportunities for increasing farm income through off-season vegetable cultivation and diversification of farming systems.
Dr. Saurav Saha, Senior Scientist (Agriculture Physics), discussed soil health management and the role of bio-fertilizers and organic inputs in sustainable organic crop production. Dr. Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Senior Scientist (Vegetable Science), shared improved practices for high-value vegetable and mushroom cultivation. Dr. Amit Kumar, Scientist (Agronomy), emphasized millet cultivation, crop rotation, green manuring, and crop diversification for enhancing farm productivity and resilience. Dr. Pempa L. Bhutia, Scientist (Agroforestry), explained the benefits of agroforestry in improving soil health, conserving natural resources, and strengthening climate resilience through organic farming.
The scientists also visited farmers’ fields, assessed crop conditions, and provided practical recommendations on nutrient management, improved cultivation practices, and the use of foliar seaweed extracts for improving net crop productivity in organic agriculture.
The programme concluded with an interactive discussion and assurance of continued technical support to the farming community under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan/MGMG programme.
