The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) conducted a one-day discussion meeting on June 11, 2026, at the Niyamak Bhavan Complex, Mumbai, to familiarise prospective participants from the public and private sectors with the principles of leadership, management and safety culture that underpin activities in the nuclear sector.

The recently promulgated SHANTI Act, 2025 envisages the participation of Indian private companies and joint ventures in the building, ownership, operation and decommissioning of nuclear power plants. The discussion meeting was organised in this context. Around 30 senior leaders from public and private sector organisations interested in the nuclear sector participated in the event.
Addressing the participants, the Chairperson, AERB, emphasized that excellence in the nuclear sector can only be achieved through effective leadership, robust management systems and a strong safety culture in organisations involved in activities related to nuclear power. While these principles are also relevant to conventional industries, the nuclear sector is unique in requiring their systematic and comprehensive application throughout the entire lifecycle of nuclear power plants and across all operational states.
The Chairperson further stated that safety culture in the nuclear industry is not merely a regulatory requirement but a shared core value that must be consistently demonstrated by leaders, managers and the workforce alike. Its importance, the Chairperson noted, cannot be overstated. The discussion meeting included presentations by senior regulators on nuclear safety fundamentals, leadership and management for safety, and safety culture, followed by interactive discussions.
The event provided AERB with valuable insights into the challenges and concerns faced by organisations that are new to the nuclear sector. It also paved the way for continued engagement and future exchanges between industry stakeholders and the regulatory body.
