Five eminent achievers from Karnataka, who have dedicated their lives to developing the country's social, educational, technical, and medical sectors, have won the highest national honors. These five great personalities have not only achieved personal success but have also brought global pride to India and Karnataka by creating a positive change in the lives of common people. Their contributions are massive, ranging from empowering rural areas to protecting the Nation's borders.

The list of award winners includes Dr. Prabhakar Kore, who created a revolution in education and healthcare; Shri Shashi Shekhar Vempati, who modernized the public broadcasting sector; Dr. Suresh Hanagavadi, who is a lifesaver for Hemophilia patients; the late Shri T. T. Jagannathan (Posthumous), the creator of Indian kitchen safety; and Dr. Shubha Venkatesh Iyengar, a famous female scientist who strengthened the nation's defense sector. These achievers have boosted the country's self-reliance and the 'Aatmanirbhar' vision through their inventions and forward-thinking ideas.

Some of them continued their social service despite facing personal hurdles and illnesses, while others showed great humanity by giving up their patent rights for the public good. They have played a huge role in everything from aviation safety to satellite launches, and in bringing free digital education to crores of rural students. Here are the brief and inspiring details of these rare achievers from Karnataka:

1. A Revolution in Education and the Light of Rural Healthcare: Dr. Prabhakar Kore

Dr. Prabhakar Basaprabhu Kore, who has been serving as the Chairman of the Karnataka Lingayat Education (KLE) Society since 1984, has brought a huge revolution in the fields of education and healthcare. He transformed the KLE Society from just 38 educational institutions into a massive network of 317 institutions. Under his guidance, 1.45 lakh students are currently studying, and notably, 50 percent of these institutions are located in rural areas. He is widely praised for keeping the same high-level infrastructure and teaching quality in both rural and urban areas. He has also set up two major universities: the 'KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research (KAHER)' and the 'KLE Technological University'.

In the medical field, he has built a network of hospitals with a total of 5,500 beds. This includes the famous 'Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Medical Research Centre' in Belagavi, a separate cancer hospital, and Ayurveda and Homeopathy hospitals. These centers provide modern treatment at a low cost to rural people in North Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa. Having served as a Rajya Sabha member for three terms and as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council once, he has empowered rural people by setting up a cooperative sugar factory, a bank, an agricultural science center, and two community radio stations. For his service, Thomas Jefferson University in America and Universiti Sains Malaysia have awarded him honorary doctorates, and the Government of Karnataka has honored him with the 'Rajyotsava Award'.

2. The Guiding Force of Indian Broadcasting: Shri Shashi Shekhar Vempati

Shri Shashi Shekhar Vempati, the youngest Chief Executive Officer of 'Prasar Bharati', gets the credit for modernizing Doordarshan and All India Radio for the digital age.Shri Shashi Shekhar Vempati, a graduate of IIT Bombay, made global inventions in wireless applications and RFID technology at Infosys. During the 2014 general elections, he successfully created platforms like 'Mission 272+' and 'Niti Central' to increase citizen participation using digital technology.

Leading Prasar Bharati from 2017 to 2022, he launched a digital platform for news delivery, HD channels, free digital archives for the public, and the 'NewsOnAir' app. During his term, DD India expanded globally to 92 countries. By rebroadcasting the 'Ramayana' serial on Doordarshan during the COVID lockdown, he set a record for the highest TV viewership globally. Through 'DD Free Dish', he ensured that free educational classes reached crores of rural students across the country. As a pioneer of 'Direct to Mobile (D2M)' technology that broadcasts TV directly to mobile phones, he is currently the co-founder of the 'DeepTech for Bharat Foundation' and is active in major national institutions like UGC and BARC.

3. A Ray of Hope and Lifesaver for Hemophilia Patients: Dr. Suresh Hanagavadi

Dr. Suresh Hanagavadi is a rare doctor and institution builder who turned his personal pain into a strength for social service. He became a lifesaver for others despite suffering from a severe form of 'Hemophilia-B' (a birth defect where blood does not clot). After witnessing the tragedy of his maternal uncle dying from bleeding due to a lack of proper treatment in his childhood, he made improving the lives of Hemophilia patients as his life's only goal. After completing his MBBS from JJM Medical College and a post-graduation in Pathology from KIMS Hubballi, he laid a strong foundation for blood safety and blood banking while serving as a Pathology Professor at JJM College in Davanagere.

The 'Karnataka Hemophilia Society' (KHS), which he started in Davanagere in 1990, is globally recognized today as the most ideal "Comprehensive Hemophilia Care Center" in the country. To bring the treatment of this highly expensive disease to the poor, his center has been providing free diagnosis, outpatient and inpatient treatment, free blood transfusions, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy rehabilitation, psychological counseling, and free food for admitted patients. Moreover, he has also started a special 'Mobile Service Unit' to bring treatment directly to the doors of rural patients.

The biggest accomplishment of his efforts is that, through his constant efforts, the Government of Karnataka introduced a historic, revolutionary scheme to distribute the highly essential 'Anti-Hemophilic Factor' (blood-clotting medicine) completely free of cost to Hemophilia patients through all government district hospitals for the first time in the country. The Government of India later implemented this model nationwide. His center, which has international partnerships with Henry Ford Hospital in America and Alder Hey Hospital in Britain, won the 'Best Treatment Centre Twin Award' at the Melbourne World Congress in 2014.

Famous late playback singer Dr. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam was so inspired by his social work that he held music concerts completely free of cost for 21 continuous years to raise funds for the society, creating a new history in the Hemophilia movement. For his outstanding service, which includes working as the President of the Hemophilia Federation of India and an advisor to the Karnataka Government's Commissioner for the Welfare of the Disabled, the Hon'ble President of India honored him with the country's prestigious "Best Divyangjan" national award in 2024. Along with this, he has received many honors, including the Deccan Herald Changemaker Award and the Red and White Bravery Award.

4. The Creator of Indian Kitchen Safety: Shri T. T. Jagannathan (Posthumous)

The late Shri T. T. Jagannathan was a brilliant businessman who led 'TTK', India's largest kitchenware company, for five decades and brought it into every home in the country. After completing his mechanical engineering at IIT Madras and higher education at Cornell University in America, he took charge of the nearly bankrupt 'TT Limited' in 1975 and turned it into a billion-dollar business. He is widely known as the "Kitchen Mogul" of India. He created jobs for thousands of people in the country by expanding the Prestige brand to Britain and America.

To prevent accidents, injuries, and deaths caused by pressure cookers, he invented a highly important safety technology called the 'Gasket Release System'. Instead of getting a patent for this revolutionary invention and making crores of rupees in profit just for himself, he showed a generous spirit by allowing the entire industry to use it for free to safeguard lives of poor and middle-class families in the country. His companies carry out many charitable activities in the fields of health and education. Awarded the best entrepreneur title by Business Standard and Ernst & Young, he was added to the CNBC TV18 'Hall of Fame' in 2025. He passed away on October 9, 2025.

5. A Proud Scientist of the Nation's Defense and Aviation Sectors: Dr. Shubha Venkatesh Iyengar

Dr. Shubha Venkatesh Iyengar, who served as a scientist at the CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories for 46 years, has made a huge contribution to India's self-reliance. She secured the first rank in both her graduation and post-graduation from Bangalore University and won a series of gold medals in Physics. The modern airport weather and runway visibility measuring system she invented, called 'Drishti', is now compulsorily used at all international airports in India and by the Indian Air Force. This has saved crores of rupees in foreign exchange for India. Global organizations like the WMO and ICAO have also recommended other countries to adopt this Indian technology.

Her contribution to the country's defense sector is extremely unique. She solved a highly complex technical problem that had stopped India's proud 'Agni' missile from reaching its target. She developed domestic components that can withstand extreme temperatures of 3000K and Mach 5 speed, which are needed for missiles and ramjet-scramjet engines, thereby helping India's satellite launch projects. America's NASA has published her research papers as its official reports. For her extraordinary achievements, she has received a total of 43 awards, including the first 'Make in India' national award in 2015.
