The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Branch Secretariat, Mumbai, in collaboration with the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), an aided institution under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), recently organised an exposure visit for Consul Generals and diplomatic representatives from Global South countries. The initiative aimed to explore avenues for collaboration in cancer care, research, capacity building and knowledge exchange.

Consul Generals from Afghanistan, Egypt, Mauritius, Sri Lanka and Vietnam participated in the programme, along with officials from the Consulates of Bangladesh, Colombia and Yemen.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sudeep Gupta, Director, Tata Memorial Centre highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships with countries facing similar socio economic and public health challenges. He noted that collaborative initiatives in cancer care and research would contribute to improving equitable access to quality healthcare across the Global South.

Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi, Director, ACTREC, and Dr. Navin Khattry, Deputy Director, ACTREC presented an overview of ACTREC's journey, its pioneering work in cancer treatment and research, international collaborations and ongoing efforts in innovation, education and capacity building.

Speaking on the role of Health Diplomacy in India's engagement with the Global South, Swapnil Thorat, Head of the MEA Branch Secretariat, Mumbai, briefed the participants on various Government of India initiatives aimed at promoting self reliance, sustainable growth and development among partner countries through cooperation in healthcare and other priority sectors.

The interaction was followed by an insightful discussion and curated tour of advanced cancer treatment facilities and child care cancer hospital, arranged by ACTREC officials within premises.
