The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office, organized a Sensitisation Programme for Resident Welfare Association (RWA) members in coordination with VGN Minerva, Nolambur, Chennai, on 12 July 2026. The programme was attended by around 30 residents and RWA representatives.

The objective of the programme was to create awareness among consumers about the importance of quality standards, consumer rights, and the role of BIS in ensuring the quality, safety, and reliability of products and services. The session aimed to empower residents with knowledge that would help them make informed purchasing decisions and promote the use of quality-certified products.
During the programme, the activities of BIS as the National Standards Body of India were highlighted, and the significance of Indian Standards in safeguarding consumer interests was explained. Participants were educated on various BIS certification schemes, including the ISI Mark, Hallmark for Gold and Silver Jewellery, and BIS CRS certification for electronic products. The importance of purchasing certified products and verifying the authenticity of certification marks was also emphasized.

The participants were introduced to the BIS Care App, which enables consumers to verify BIS licences and Hallmarked jewellery registrations, as well as register complaints regarding substandard products. Information was also shared on consumer protection measures and the grievance redressal mechanisms available through BIS.
The session was highly interactive, with participants actively engaging in discussions and seeking clarifications on certification, product quality, and consumer rights. BIS officials addressed the queries raised and encouraged residents to spread awareness about quality standards and certified products within their communities.
The programme concluded with a positive response from the participants, who appreciated the initiative and expressed their commitment to promoting quality consciousness among fellow residents. Such outreach programmes form an important part of BIS's efforts to strengthen consumer awareness and foster a culture of quality and safety in society.
