Bhilai Steel Plant has taken a major step towards its long-term capacity expansion programme by signing a contractual agreement with MECON Limited for Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management (EPCM) consultancy services for its 3.44 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) crude steel expansion project.

At present, Bhilai Steel Plant has a crude steel production capacity of 7 million tonnes per annum. The proposed expansion will enhance the plant's crude steel capacity to 10.2 million tonnes per annum by 2030-31, further strengthening its position as one of India's leading integrated steel plants while contributing significantly to the country's growing demand for steel.

The Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management (EPCM) consultancy agreement was signed on July 11, 2026, by Anurag Upadhyay, Chief General Manager (Projects-Commercial), Bhilai Steel Plant, and R. K. Verma, Senior General Manager (Marketing), MECON Limited, in the presence of P. K. Sarkar, Executive Director (Projects), Bhilai Steel Plant; Rajeev Khillan, Director (Projects), MECON Limited; Dr. R. K. Dutta, Executive Director (Delhi Office), MECON Limited; Unmesh Bharadwaj, Chief General Manager (Projects), Bhilai Steel Plant; Manas Kumar Gupta, Chief General Manager (Projects), Bhilai Steel Plant; R. K. Pillai, Senior General Manager (MECON-Bhilai Centre), along with senior officials of both organisations.

The signing of the agreement marks the formal commencement of the implementation phase of the expansion project. Under the contract, MECON Limited will provide comprehensive consultancy services covering project planning, engineering, procurement management, construction management and overall project execution to ensure timely and efficient implementation.

The expansion project is expected to significantly enhance Bhilai Steel Plant's production capability, improve operational efficiency through the adoption of advanced technologies and strengthen the Steel Authority of India Limited's strategic objective of increasing domestic steel production in line with India's rapidly expanding infrastructure requirements and long-term economic growth.
