The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Chennai Branch Office organised a two-day Capsule Training Course on “Packaged Drinking Water (Other than Packaged Natural Mineral Water) as per IS 14543” on 16–17 July 2026 at the BIS Southern Regional Office, Taramani, Chennai, for Quality Control Personnel.

Briefing about the objectives of the programme, Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist–F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, emphasised the importance of Indian Standards in ensuring the quality, safety and reliability of products reaching consumers. He stated this Capsule Training Course was organised to enhance the technical knowledge and awareness of Quality Control Personnel involved in the testing of packaged drinking water. Highlighting that packaged drinking water bottles are often exposed to varying environmental conditions during transportation and storage, he noted that such conditions should not compromise the quality and safety of the product. He further advised that adherence to IS 14543 is essential to ensure that consumers receive safe and quality packaged drinking water as BIS assures third party certification for the product.

The technical sessions were conducted by Shri Ajay Chandel, Scientist–C / Deputy Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office. The sessions covered the provisions of IS 14543, Product Manual, Scheme of Inspection and Testing (SIT), specific guidelines and record-keeping requirements under the BIS Product Certification Scheme. Participants were also briefed on procedures relating to Grant of Licence, Inclusion, Renewal, Operation, Deferment, Expiry and Dormancy of licences, along with important features of the e-BIS portal. Special sessions were conducted on sample failure, risk assessment, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventive measures for microbiological contamination and maintenance of hygienic conditions in packaged drinking water manufacturing units.

As part of the programme, participants visited the BIS Southern Regional Laboratory (SRL), Taramani, Chennai, where the SRL team conducted practical demonstrations on testing of important and critical parameters prescribed under IS 14543. A group activity on failure assessment, root cause analysis and corrective actions, followed by presentations and interactive discussions, enabled participants to gain practical insights into quality control and conformity assessment requirements.

   

The programme concluded with a feedback and closing session by Shri Muninarayana R, Scientist–E / Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office, during which participants appreciated the practical orientation and technical guidance provided throughout the training. Certificates were presented to all participants upon successful completion of the course.

BIS regularly conducts Capsule Courses and technical training programmes to support industries in improving product quality, safety and ensuring compliance with Indian Standards. During the programme, participants were also informed that consumers and industry stakeholders can verify the authenticity of Hallmark registrations, ISI Mark licences and Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) registrations, and also lodge complaints, through the BIS Care App or the BIS portals, www.manakonline.in  and www.bis.gov.in.
