Government Ensures Adequate Fertilizer Availability Through Advance Planning and Global Supply Partnerships

Overall Fertilizer Requirement Increased by Around 4% in 2025-26; Supply Maintained Through Domestic Production and Strategic Imports

प्रविष्टि तिथि: 21 JUL 2026 6:10PM by PIB Delhi

The Government of India has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the timely and adequate availability of fertilizers across the country through advance planning, robust domestic production, and strategic import arrangements with partner countries.

The Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (DA&FW), in consultation with State Governments, assesses the requirement of fertilizers before every cropping season. Based on these assessments, the Department of Fertilizers coordinates domestic production, imports, and distribution to ensure uninterrupted supplies to farmers across the country.

During 2025-26, the total fertilizer requirement was assessed at 677.18 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) compared to 649.43 LMT during 2024-25, reflecting an increase of around 4 per cent. The Government has clarified that there has not been a 41 per cent increase in fertilizer demand during 2025-26.

During the ongoing Kharif 2026 season (1 April 2026 to 14 July 2026), total consumption of major fertilizers—Urea, DAP, MOP and NPKS—stood at 151.74 LMT, compared to 157.05 LMT during the corresponding period of Kharif 2025.

To further strengthen fertilizer supply security, Indian fertilizer companies have entered into long-term import agreements with major fertilizer-producing countries. During 2025-26, agreements have been signed for the import of 31 LMT of DAP from Saudi Arabia, 2.50 LMT of MOP from Jordan, 25 LMT of DAP/TSP from Morocco, and 30.10 LMT of DAP/NPKs from Russia. These agreements have facilitated the availability of substantial fertilizer quantities and strengthened the country's supply chain against global uncertainties.

The year-wise and season-wise details of fertilizer demand, availability and consumption are provided in the Annexure.
