CAPACITY AUGMENTATION WORKS ON HOWRAH-BALLY-DANKUNI-HOOGHLY CORRIDOR

In a written reply to the question on the capacity augmentation works across Indian Railways, in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the capacity augmentation works across Indian Railways are planned and executed based on traffic trends, operational & maintenance requirements and requirements for further development.
In an answer to the unstarred question raised by MP, Smt Rachna Banerjee on whether the Government has undertaken or proposes to undertake capacity augmentation works on the Howrah-Bally-Dankuni-Hooghly corridor, including additional lines, yard remodelling and terminal infrastructure development and if so, the details thereof as well as the present status of the Dankuni coaching terminal and freight handling expansion project including the expected date of commencement and completion of the works and whether the Government has assessed the likely increase in suburban train frequency and freight handling capacity after completion of the ongoing and proposed projects on the corridor and if so, the details thereof with the details of funds allocated for railway infrastructure projects in the Howrah-Hooghly section of Eastern Railway during the financial years 2025-26 and 2026-27, Shri Vaishnaw stated, Howrah Yard remodelling work involving installation of new interlocking system, extension of 4 platforms and construction of service building at a sanctioned cost of Rs. 92.85 Cr has been taken in the Howrah-Dankuni area. He added, Dankuni Yard remodelling work involving extension of existing shunting line and upgradation of signalling/ interlocking arrangements at a sanctioned cost of Rs. 27.18 Cr. Has also been undertaken. Besides, Shri Vaishnaw said, preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Dankuni coaching terminal has been taken up.
Regarding the trains serving Howrah-Dankuni sector, Shri Vaishnaw said, at present, Howrah-Dankuni sector is being served by following 113 regular services and 01 special service which are as under: -

Shri Vaishnaw stated that besides, introduction of new train services is an on-going process, which depends on various factors including-
● Capacity of that section
● Availability of path
● Availability of required rolling stock
● Availability of matching infrastructure for rolling stock
● Maintenance requirement of railway tracks and other assets.
● Occupancy and the traffic requirement of the section.
Additionally, six freight trains per day ply over the Howrah–Dankuni section, and four freight trains per day ply over the Howrah–Hooghly section.
To decongest and improve mobility of both passenger and freight trains in the section, following works have been taken up:

1 Dankuni-Baltikuri 3rd and 4th line (17 Km) Project has been sanctioned in 2025-26 at a cost of Rs. 428 Cr.
Project has been declared as a Special Railway project for land acquisition.
The Competent Authority for Land Acquisition (CALA) has been appointed.
Land acquisition has been taken up.
2 Chandanpur -Saktigarh 4th line (43 Km) Project has been sanctioned in 2024-25 at a cost of Rs. 700 Cr.
Land acquisition has been taken up.
A new Dedicated Freight Corridor connecting Dankuni in East to Surat in West, has been announced in the Union Budget 2026, the Minister pointed out. The work of preparation/ updation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this corridor has been taken up.
