The Project Implementation Unit (PIU), Amaravati, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is undertaking continuous measures to prevent the movement of stray animals on National Highways under its jurisdiction and enhance commuter safety.
As part of ongoing safety initiatives, four (04) vulnerable locations and three (03) accident black spots in Chilakaluripet–Vijayawada Section of NH-16 are under continuous monitoring.
Regular stray animal removal drives are being conducted in Chilakaluripet–Vijayawada Section of NH-16, Chilakaluripet Bypass, Vijayawada Bypass, and Giddalur–Vinukonda Section of NH-544D. Incident Management Teams, supported by Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs), continuously monitor these stretches, safely remove stray animals, and return them to their owners wherever identified. Round-the-clock patrolling is carried out in three shifts. This activity is being carried out continuously as part of NHAI's road safety initiatives.
The Incident Management Manager and Route Patrol Teams regularly conduct awareness campaigns in nearby villages, advising livestock owners not to allow their animals onto the National Highway. Regular coordination meetings with the Police Department, Municipal Authorities, and Village Panchayats are strengthening preventive measures. Most stray animals found on the highway belong to nearby villagers and generally left for open grazing along the highway corridor.
NHAI remains committed to improving road safety through continuous monitoring, proactive incident management, public awareness, and coordination with local authorities. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously, adhere to speed limits, and report stray animals by dialing 1033. NHAI appeals to livestock owners to prevent their animals from entering into National Highways. The National Highway Emergency Helpline (1033) operates 24×7 for reporting stray animals and other emergencies, enabling prompt response.
