As a part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of IIT Kharagpur, the IIT Kharagpur Research Park today hosted an interactive session on "The Art of Doing Economic Reforms" featuring Shri Sanjeev Sanyal, Member, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, and Chancellor, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics.

The session brought together more than 450 students, researchers, faculty members, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, innovators and alumni for a discussion on India's reform journey and the roadmap towards Viksit Bharat @2047.

In his address, Shri  Sanyal highlighted that successful economic reforms require a systems-based approach rather than isolated interventions. He observed that durable reforms are built through careful process mapping, removal of bottlenecks and continuous improvements that strengthen institutions without disrupting stability.

Speaking on India's long-term growth strategy, Shri Sanyal stressed that macroeconomic stability remains fundamental to sustained development.
"High growth is important, but it must be accompanied by macroeconomic stability. Development is a marathon, not a sprint. Sustainable reforms create lasting outcomes," he said.

Highlighting the impact of emerging technologies, Shri Sanyal said that the ongoing AI revolution should be viewed as an opportunity to transform human capital rather than replace it. He noted that education systems must evolve from lecture-centric models to lifelong learning, apprenticeships and practical skill development.

"The future of education lies in continuous learning. Knowledge is increasingly available to everyone; the real advantage will come from the ability to apply it, acquire new skills throughout life and solve real-world problems," he said.

He also underscored the importance of strengthening India's manufacturing ecosystem through improved infrastructure, policy reforms and a change in mindset.
"India has every ingredient to emerge as a major manufacturing hub. Infrastructure, process reforms and the confidence to build at scale are together creating new opportunities across sectors, from electronics to shipbuilding," Shri Sanyal observed.

Welcoming the gathering, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur, said the session offered valuable insights into the philosophy of designing meaningful reforms.
"The session highlighted that transformative change does not always come through dramatic interventions. Well-designed, incremental reforms, supported by systems thinking and a holistic approach, can deliver lasting impact without destabilising institutions," he said.

Prof. Chakraborty further noted that the discussions resonated strongly with IIT Kharagpur's vision of building a consequential institution through innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration and meaningful engagement with national priorities.

The programme concluded with an engaging fireside conversation between Prof. Chakraborty and Shri Sanyal on governance reforms, manufacturing, artificial intelligence, higher education, innovation and India's evolving development trajectory. The interactive session also featured questions from students, researchers and industry professionals, making it a vibrant exchange of ideas.

The event reaffirmed IIT Kharagpur Research Park's commitment to fostering dialogue at the intersection of academia, government, industry and society while contributing to the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
