The Directorate General of Taxpayer Services (DGTS), Mumbai Zonal Unit, in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Western Region, organised a Seminar-cum-Webinar on "Impact of Geopolitics on our Trade – Import & Exports" on 7 August 2026. The programme aimed to create awareness among exporters, importers, industry representatives, professionals, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders about the impact of global geopolitical developments on trade, supply chains and international business.

The programme began with a welcome address by Shri Anurag Agarwal, Co-Chairman, CII Western Region Subcommittee on International Trade & Investment and CEO – Global Exports and New Businesses, Polycab India Ltd. He highlighted the need for businesses to remain informed and adaptable in the changing global trade environment.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Sumit Kumar, Principal Additional Director General, DGTS, Mumbai Zonal Unit, said that geopolitical developments, tariffs, sanctions and supply chain disruptions are reshaping global trade. He emphasised the need for businesses to strengthen resilience by diversifying markets, closely monitoring geopolitical developments and ensuring compliance with evolving trade regulations. He also highlighted CBIC's trade facilitation reforms, including integrated Customs systems, e-Bond, electronic bank guarantees and faceless assessment, which have improved the ease of doing business.

Dr. Joshua Ebenezer, Principal Consultant, NuCov Facili-Trade and Member, CII National Taxation Committee, spoke on the growing role of geopolitics in international trade. He encouraged businesses to strengthen compliance, diversify supply chains and leverage emerging global opportunities.

The second technical session was delivered by Shri Uttam Sinha, Senior Fellow, Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses. He explained the growing importance of geoeconomics, the strategic competition between major economies and the need for India to build strategic resilience while preserving its strategic autonomy.

The seminar witnessed active participation from exporters, importers, trade bodies, industry representatives, professionals and CBIC officers across the country. Interactive discussions enabled participants to better understand emerging global trade challenges and opportunities. The programme marked the 27th outreach initiative organised by DGTS, Mumbai Zonal Unit since April 2026, reaffirming its commitment to stakeholder engagement, taxpayer awareness and trade facilitation.
